Cortina d'Ampezzo is a fashionable ski resort town located in the Veneto region of Italy, just a two hour drive from Venice. The area has been a winter sports mecca since the 1930s and even played host to the first Italian Winter Olympic Games in 1956. Known as the “Queen of the Dolomites”, it is one of the best-known ski resorts worldwide and hosts international sports events annually such as the Alpine Ski World Cup, the Tour de Ski, ice hockey and curling championships, and Cortina Winter Polo. It is also stunningly beautiful, with plenty of restaurants and cafes in town offering delicious food, a vibrant nightlife and good shopping. However, in addition to this, it is home to a rather unique Christmas tradition.
If you are looking for a ski holiday destination this festive season, there is nowhere better to choose. Once you have found a holiday rental in Cortina D'Ampezzo, you can take in the picturesque surroundings, take advantage of the fantastic slopes and amazing amenities and then make time to see Cortina's special parade.
This parade takes place in late December 2016 and early January 2017 and involves hundreds of skiiers taking to the slopes around the town and skiing down in a special torchlight procession. Traditionally, there is a procession on Christmas Eve at Midnight and now there are other parades as well during the winter months. Everything is, of course, subject to weather conditions but these processions tend to begin at 8.30pm when ski guides with torches descend the mountain towards the town,. The parade then continues through the streets before arriving at the Piazza Largo Poste and ends at 10pm with a fireworks display.
On the 30th of December, a number of torchlight processions will be held throughout the region and, upon arriving, skiiers and visitors alike can see in the New Year with free hot drinks like mulled wine and snacks like Italy's traditional panettone.
For the ultimate skiing destination in Italy which has serious style and unique attractions, there is nowhere else quite like Cortina D'Ampezzo.
