View of Issogne Castle
Head to the capital town called Aosta and walk through its beautiful 4th century cathedral. The cathedral is home to a mysterious crypt which is open for visitors to tour around. Climb up to admire the 14th century Verrès Castle in Aosta Valley that is recognised as one of the finest buildings dating from the Middle Ages in the area. It’s built as a singular sturdy structure on a rocky mass of land that falls steeply on one side.

It faces Issogne Castle on the opposite side of the Dora Baltea. Issogne Castle was an elaborately built manor, much more welcoming in appearance than its austere neighbour, Verrès Castle. It has a splendid fountain shaped like a pomegranate tree and a beautifully painted portico depicting colourful scenes of Alpine life.
