Neptune's fountain in Bologna city
Start off your day of touring with a walk around the beautiful 15th century Piazza Maggiore in Bologna’s historic centre. Surrounding the square is a mesmerising collection of lavish palaces and the Basilica of San Petronio.

Its perimeter is a massive 132 metres long and 66 metres wide; making it’s the 15th largest church in the world! It houses the relics of Saint Petronius who was a 5th century bishop in Bologna and now it’s endeared patron saint.

Take a splendid photo of the Fountain of Neptune in Piazza del Nettuno close to Piazza Maggiore. This was the masterpiece work of a skilled sculptor called Giambologna and was completed around 1567.

Of course a visit to Bologna isn’t complete without walking under some of the many porticoes of the city. Nearly every building in the historic centre is framed by decorative porches on the ground floor and provides excellent shelter on rainy days!

Bologna is home to the now world famous dish, spaghetti Bolognaise but you’ll see when you arrive here that the traditional dish is quite different.
Bolognaise with tagliatelli
Tagliatelle pasta is used originally and the sauce is even richer in flavour, including chopped up smoky pancetta bacon, garlic, herbs and lots of seasoning.

Spend an evening listening to classical music at the magnificent Teatro Comunale di Bologna or simply stroll through the streets admiring the sights of this magical city lit up at night.

Come and experience Bologna for yourself on your next exciting vacation to Italy!
