Alghero has been in existence since pre-historic times due to its strategic position on the coast.
The Nuraghe civilisation once lived in Alghero and the surrounding area from around 1500BC and has left numerous monuments of their presence for tourists to explore.
There are many superb sights to see in Alghero so why not start the day with a refreshing walk along the Catalan city walls which were constructed in the 16th century. Then head inwards to Alghero’s historic centre and its beautifully built cathedral.

Two prominent towers here called Torre del Portal and Torre dell’ Espero’ Reial have interesting histories to tell which can be learned on a guided tour of Alghero. Other notable buildings include the Palazzo d’Albis, Palazzo Carcassona and the Church of St. Francis.
Nature lovers will be in their element along the coastline of Alghero where there are over 300 caves, both above and underwater. This makes it a superb snorkelling and scuba diving spot as a great variation of marine and coral life thrive in these sheltered caves.
Be sure to hop on a ferry to Neptune’s Grotto close to Alghero. This is a popular cave which was discovered by fishermen in the 18th century and is full of stalactites. Scuba divers can visit the famous Nereo Cave along the coast of Alghero which is the largest and one of the most stunning underwater caves in Europe!
