The ancient Nuragic civilisation of Sardinia were a skilled people who were believed to have lived on this island from the 18th century BC to the 2nd century AD. Their legacy remains in the form of the ‘Su Nuraxi di Barumini’, a collection of around 7,000 tower fortresses that are scattered across the island and region of Sardinia.

Tourists would thoroughly enjoy a tour around many of these intriguing ancient monuments and learn more about their history from a professional tour guide. What’s most strange about the Su Nuraxi di Barumini is that many historical and archaeological experts are still undecided on what these nuraghes were used for.

They could have been used as religious worship sites, normal dwellings, military strongholds or a combination of all!

Many were built on hills which suggested they were used by onlookers to track movements across the lands of Sardinia. The UNESCO World Heritage Site here is comprised of a specific complex of nuraghes. The largest of these is called Nuraghe Santu Antine which stands close to the village of Torralba.

Visitors might also want to visit other notable nuraghes in the areas of Alghero, Orroli and Macomer. Be sure to bring your camera to capture memories of these unusual ancient monuments to show to your family and friends!

Those with a passion for archaeology would certainly love a day trip to Su Nuraxi di Barumini in Sardinia so why not make plans to visit this enchanting place on your next holiday to Italy?
