The picturesque city of Sassari is the second largest in Sardinia and is home to a wonderful collection of art, culture and historical archives. Witness the ‘Faradda di li Candareri’ celebration in Sassari which takes place in mid August on the eve of the Sacred Feast of the Assumption in the Catholic calendar. The main event involves a procession of people carrying giant wooden candles through the streets of Sassari in commemoration of the end of a horrific plague in 1582 which took the lives of thousands of people here.

Another folk festival takes place here in the last Sunday of May. It’s one of the main celebrations of the year here in Sassari where people gather, dressed up in local folk costumes and parade through the streets. Horse riders and cheerful bands accompanying them and together help to make this a truly heart warming festival to be a part of!

Savour the rich flavours of traditional cuisine in Sassari city! The people of Sassari use a lot of vegetables in their cooking.

A typical simple yet delicious peasant dish here is called 'La Cavolata' which is seasoned cabbage soup with pork. Another favourite of the area is lamb Cordula with is cooked lamb offal, flavoured with juniper berries.

Fish is also on the menu frequently and specialities include fried calamari and a delicious simple cuttlefish and cherry tomato bake. Finish off this superb meal with a fine red local wine and a platter of cold meat cuts, cheese, artichokes and a drizzle of aromatic olive oil.
