Italians all over commemorate the brave men and women who resisted the rule of Mussolini’s troops and Nazi soldiers during World War II and host concerts, feasts, political rallies and other gatherings in their honour. Most businesses close their doors as it’s an official public holiday.
The Italian flag is proudly raised and waved in cities, towns and villages across the country and tourists are quite likely to hear the song ‘Bella Ciao’ played several times throughout the day as it was a common resistance song sung during the war.
