Come and see the city of Catanzaro in the region of Calabria! This is a seaside paradise with lots of nearby towns and villages to explore also! Catanzaro overlooks the Gulf of Squillace in the Ionian Sea.

This popular tourist holiday resort touches the coast and stretches far up into the mountains to a height of six hundred metres! The historical city centre sits halfway up, overlooking the glittering sea at a height of approximately three hundred metres.

Visitors wishing to stay here for a few days have a choice of holiday rentals in Carrao, less than twenty kilometres from Catanzaro where they can relax and unwind after a thrilling day of explorations!

It can get very windy here with strong breezes frequently coming in from the sea.

These winds make for ideal conditions for water sports such as wind surfing and kite surfing! Go cycling or hiking around the Gulf of Squillace to see the sheer magnificent beauty of this coastal paradise. The cathedral was built here in 1121, it had a beautiful Renaissance facade which was later added in the 16th century but was badly destroyed during World War II. It has been faithfully rebuilt, encompassing much of the original design.

See the remains of a Norman castle and learn about its thrilling history! Visit the museum in the historic centre of the city which displays a wonderful selection of ancient coins and prehistoric artefacts.

Drive over Catanzaro Bridge, a one arched example of great bridge design that is one of the tallest in Europe! If you're scared of heights, this will certainly be a challenge to cross!

The cuisine of Catanzaro is truly delightful! Olive oil, hot chilli peppers and whole wheat bread are staple foods here and many delicious meals are made from a range of simple ingredients. Be sure to sample 'Pasta China' which is pasta stuffed with cheese, boiled egg and covered with a rich meat sauce and sprinkled with melted cheese.

Another popular dish here is ‘U Murzeddhu’ which is tripe cooked in a spicy tomato sauce and served in a rounded focaccia crust loaf with the white bread interior removed. This is a heart warming dish that is guaranteed to satisfy a ravenous appetite after a long day of touring!
