Despite being tragically destroyed by an earthquake in 1693 it was beautifully rebuilt using late baroque style architecture to become the town it is today.
Modica is spread across steep valleys and hills which only adds to its impact when seen for the first time. Close to the town of Ragusa, Modica is close to several interesting tourist spots in the area and is home to an excellent tourist information office on Corso Umberto along with some sublime chocolate shops.
There are two striking baroque designed cathedrals in Modica; one of which is Duomo di San Pietro of which the original structure dated back to the 14th century but is significantly more modern now due to being badly damaged by two earthquakes. The Duomo di San Giorgio is a wonderful sight to experience for tourists, both inside and out.
To see some spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and hills from Modica, ascend up to the Belvedere Pizzo and afterwards visit the intriguing cave church called the Chiesa Rupestre di San Nicolo Inferiore which was uncovered in 1987.
