Next door, for a small entry fee you can walk around the cloisters of the Benedictine monastery which dates back to the 12th century. On a bright sunny day tourists can see the scenic Aeolian Islands off the north east coast of Sicily and Palermo city can be seen 15 kilometres below.
There are lovely craft and souvenir shops to explore in Monreale as well as a fine choice of delicious eateries. Monreale is even nicer to walk around in the late evening when most of the bus loads of passing tourists have left.

Monreale overlooks a scenic valley called ‘La Conca d’oro’ which means ‘The Golden Shell’. The valley was named because of the large volume of almond, orange and olive trees which grow here and is a wonderful sight to behold.
