On the Northeast coast of Sicily, on the narrow strait of Messina between the island and mainland Italy lies the stunning city of Messina! Known as ‘The Door of Sicily’, visitors would thoroughly enjoy a relaxing stay at a holiday villa in the Taormina area, along the east coast of Sicily where they can base their exploration of the north eastern city of Messina.

Ferries transport visitors between the narrow stretch of water between Sicily and Reggio Calabria in the region of Calabria frequently and so is a busy place, full of life and excitement!

Those with a love of outdoor sports such as surfing, canoeing and hiking will certainly love it here! Take a day to sail out to the Aeolian archipelago, a collection of pretty little islands waiting to be explored. Stop off at Vulcan island to immerse yourself in natural thermal pools of hot mud and saltwater which are excellent for treating many aggravating skin conditions! There are many hiking trails set up through the islands that offer breathtaking views, no matter where you turn your head!
Parco dei nebrodi
Lava trails run through the land here like split ink. They have formed spectacular naturally formed artistic pieces of hardened lava that have been shaped over the year by the sea. To fully appreciate nature’s art, go for a scuba diving lesson off the islands where you can see the bottom of some of these magnificent structures!

Back on dry land, take a few hours to visit the Regional Park of Nebrodi which are nicknamed ‘The lungs of Sicily’! It is abundant with lots of vegetation of tall trees covering a picturesque area of cliffs, caves and valleys. Be sure to take some photographs when you’re here...it has to be seen again to be fully believed!

There are many exciting festivals held in Messina throughout the year. On the 13th and 14th of August annually, locals gather to celebrate the ‘Ride of the Giants’ festival.

Two huge statues, called Grifone and Mata are placed on a float and drawn through the city in celebration of its founding. Here you will learn all about the stories woven through Messina’s history and have lots of fun as well!
The famous fountain of Orion
Be sure to visit the ancient open air theatre which was built here during Greek times and well maintained during the rule of the Roman Empire afterwards. It’s a masterpiece of craftsmanship and is open for many performances throughout the year. It’s a wonderful place to sit, under the moon and stars during a magical opera or classical music performance!

The city itself is home to many interesting museums and churches which offer a rich account of Messina’s exciting history and unique culture and traditions. On your strolls through the streets, see the famous fountain of Orion and the remains of a Pagan Temple that was built in honour of the God of the Sea, Neptune.

Messina has so much to offer tourists; it would actually be an ideal place to spend a week’s worth of holidays to get around all of its wonderful attractions. So be sure to think of it when planning your next Italian getaway!
