The lake gradually began to fill with water around 370,000 years ago when the last significant surface volcanic activity ceased. The lava cooled and hardened into rock to make a perfect basin for the lake to form. Two islands sprang up within Lake Bolsena when two underwater eruptions occurred around 104 BC. They’re called Bisentina and Martena.
