On the other side of Palatine hill is the Circus Maximus, an ancient chariot racing stadium that could accommodate 150,000 spectators! The legend of the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus mentions a cave in Palatine hill as the home of the twins when they were rescued and raised by a she-wolf!
Another intriguing myth linked to Palatine hill refers to it as the site where the Roman demi-god and hero, Hercules defeated a fire breathing giant called Cacus! Apparently Hercules thumped Cacus so hard to the ground with his famous club that it left a cleft on the south-east corner of Palatine hill which can still be seen today. A staircase was constructed here that bears reference to this exciting story.
