Once upon a time according to legend, two twin boys called Romulus and Remus were born and they were destined for greatness as their parents were famous in their own right. Their mother was called Rhea Silvia, a sacred priestess and their father was Mars, the Roman god of war.

Their uncle, a jealous man who wanted to bypass the twins’ right to royal leadership so he could be king, plotted to have them murdered. But the servant he ordered to commit this heinous crime instead placed them in a basket and set it floating down the River Tiber.

This basket finally floated back into the river shore and was found by a she-wolf. She raised them as her own, breastfeeding them and helping them grow big and strong. Once adults, the twins killed their evil uncle and returned the rightful kingship to their grandfather.

After that they decided to found a great and powerful city which was to become known as Rome. Sadly the brothers had a fatal falling out during this construction. Romulus had to enforce a law he set which his brother Remus had broken and killed him! He went on to become the first king of the city and governed it well for many years.
