The Papal Palace is an elaborate building in Viterbo that served as a refuge or retreat for Pope during times of unrest in Rome. Also worth visiting is the Romanesque San Lorenzo cathedral. Although it was badly damaged during World War II in 1944, it has been beautifully restored and actually houses the tomb of Pope John XXI and a selection of exquisite artworks and sculptures.
An old castle still stands here, much of which is now in ruins but it would make a lovely photographic background for a souvenir photograph of your visit here! Stroll around the civic museum which has some fascinating archaeological displays and a detailed history of the local area around Viterbo.

There are many thermal springs in and around Viterbo, renowned for their healing properties. Tourists are free to bathe in these all year around and they stay at a cosy temperature of 55 degrees Celsius. They even earned themselves a mention in Dante’s Divine Comedy!
