The Angelo Azzurro, or Blue Angel, is an Italian cocktail that is beloved but a little lesser-known. While the Americano, Bellini, Rossini and Negroni are famous stalwarts of bars all over the globe, the Angelo Azzurro is more something that the seasoned cocktail drinker might order. The origins of the drink have become a little obscured by time. Of the different origin stories, the most accepted is that it is a variant of the Blue Lagoon and was created in the fifties or sixties.

Alternately called the “most beautiful garden in the world”, the “most romantic garden in the world”, enchanted and home to fairies, the Garden of Ninfa, just outside Rome is a spectacularly beautiful park. The garden includes the remains of the ancient city of Ninfa and is known mostly to garden enthusiasts. A bit of a well-kept secret, it is still visited by over 60,000 people a year and is well worth stopping by if you get a chance. Everywhere you turn, you'll be met by picturesque vistas straight out of paintings or storybooks. MAXXI is located in the Flaminio Quarter of Rome, on the site of a former Caserma Montello military barracks and incorporates parts of this earlier structure. The building was designed by lauded architect Zaha Hadid after an international competition was held to find a suitable design. Built over a period of ten years, the building went on to win the Stirling Prize of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2010. Considered an important contemporary gem in the city, it has been described by the Guardian as, "Hadid's finest built work to date," and, "a masterpiece fit to sit alongside Rome's ancient wonders." Opened to the public in 2010, the museum was the first national institution in Italy that was dedicated to contemporary art and architecture and was conceived of as a broad cultural campus. MAXXI is managed by a Foundation that was established in 2009 by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and headed by Giovanna Melandri and this sleek contemporary museum is a key hub of creativity and a place for experimentation and innovation.

Rome may be home to the Pope and the centre of Catholicism but it is also the capital of Italy and a major urban area. As a result, there are plenty of people of all sorts of faiths in the city and, in particular, the city is home to one of the world’s oldest Jewish populations who have remained despite the various efforts to force them out throughout history, so if you were considering spending the Holidays in Italy then you might be glad to know that it is not only a wonderful place for those who celebrate Christmas, with all sorts Christmas-themed things to see and do, but it is also a wonderful place to spend Hanukkah.
