Castello Sonnino, or Castello di Montespertoli, is a stunning castle on a wine estate next to a village called Montespertoli in the Chianti region of Tuscany, 20km south of Florence. Dating back as far as the 13th century, this 150 hectare estate has been the home of the de Renzis Sonnino family since the beginning of the nineteenth century. The arrival of Baron Alessandro and Baroness Caterina de Renzis Sonnino, with their children Virginia and Leone, in 1987, saw the estate transformed into the well-oiled machine that it is today and their conservative renovation work and “commitment to the protection of the historic-cultural heritage and the revival of the winegrowing activity” have made Castello Sonnino one of the most highly regarded wine producers in Florentine Chianti.

Castello Di Monsanto: Take A Tour Of This Stunning Chianti Winery...

Beautiful and historic wineries that are located in the most extraordinary settings are not unusual in Tuscany but, though there are many and many that we have discussed in this blog on numerous occasions in the past, there are many more excellent examples that we have yet to discover and for visitors to the region to discover. So, if you're a serious wine-lover who is thinking of planning a vacation sometime soon, there can be no doubt that Tuscany makes for a truly idyllic and perfect holiday destination to go and see where great Italian wines are made, taste wines, learn about them, buy and ship bottles home, and to engage in a vibrant and ancient wine culture.

One particularly scenic and lovely winery in which one can do all of the above and more besides is the beautiful Castello di Monsanto. While the Castello di Monsanto actually dates back to the middle of the 18th century and wine production in the area goes back centuries, it is in the last fifty years that the estate has become home to the Bianchi family and their beloved wines. Located in Barberino Val d'Elsa, in western Chianti Classico, a bit northwest of Castellina in Chianti, this incredible historic castle was where founder Aldo Bianchi, a native of San Gimignano who had first left Tuscany before the Second World War to seek fortune elsewhere in the North of Italy, found himself at a wedding. Absolutely beautiful house in very private location. Very high quality. Perfect for children. We stayed there with our four children ages 5 to 11 and they absolutely loved it. Fantastic pool area and loads of space for the kids to run around. The owners were offsite but very helpful when needed. Very friendly. Would return in a heart beat.

Set in a lovely area about a 10 minute drive to shops and restaurants. The pool is beautiful overlooking the surrounding countryside and the actual villa is spacious and well appointed. My only comment would be that the 2 bedrooms upstairs would need to share a bathroom, but only if the villa was up to full capacity.

Ein Absoluter schöner Urlaub. Francesco war sehr sehr freundlich und das Haus TOP in Ordnung. Keine Mängel, keine Probleme, alles wie es sein soll. Gartenanlage super gepflegt, Haus sauber und alle Küchengerätschaften haben gut funktioniert. Nächster Supermarkt 6 km entfernt, was will man mehr. Wir haben uns alle sehr wohl gefühlt. Wij hebben hier een top vakantie gehad. Het huis heeft een prachtig uitzicht, een heerlijke tuin met zwembad en is van binnen netjes afgewerkt en van alle luxe voorzien. De 3 badkamers waren ook erg fijn. Minpuntjes: de afwasmachine deed het niet en van al het servies e.d. hadden ze precies 8.

The 3 bathrooms were also very nice. Minuses: the dishwasher did not work and for all the crockery etc. we had exactly 8 pieces.

The property is in a good central position within easy reach of Pisa, Florence and Sienna and of cause - Chianti. Stunning views across the whole area including San Gimigano. The villa was newly refurbished and was in great condition with a very nice pool and garden. The interior is spacious and has all modern equipment and some impressive touches like the Jacuzzi. We stayed for one week as a family of 4 and enjoyed our time there - some good restaurants in the area too. On the downside, the villa does not suit a young family like ours as the 3 bedrooms are spread over 3 floors so if you want your children nearby, then you have to use the sofa bed in the upstairs living area. Sleeping upstairs in summer is HOT but you cannot open the windows due to the number of biting insects and lack of window nets. Take a mozzi net or lots of repellent. Would certainly return or recommend
