In the idyllic beauty of Sicily, you will find Syracuse, a historic and lush city and province. There are plenty of wonderful things to do to pass your time on a trip to Syracuse but one of the most distinctive sights in the area is the Ear of Dionysius, or Orecchio di Dionisio, a very particular cave set within the Stone Quarry of Paradise, or Latomia di Paradiso. The cave was named by the great, and troubled, Italian Master, Caravaggio and given due to the lingering presence of a ghost.

Dragons seem to be all the rage once more due to the immense popularity of the Game of Thrones book and television series but did you know that a cathedral in Italy claims to house a bone from the rib cage of a dragon?

It seems bizarre and unlikely but it's true, the Cathedral of Saint Leucio in Atessa in Abruzzo, Italy, has a dragon rib on display inside the church. Of course, there is a reason for this, a legend about the local area which is still told to this day. Padernello Castle, located in Brescia in Lombardy, looks like it has been pulled from the most beautiful storybook you ever read as a child. Though you'll never be stuck for something to see or do in Rome, sometimes one becomes tired of museums and churches but if you're visiting the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, an oddity outside the doors will provide a little bit of fun and light relief. Dating to around the 1st century AD, the Bocca della Verità, or Mouth of Truth, is a tall stone disc with a humanoid face carved into its surface. With hollow holes for eyes and a gaping mouth, it is a somewhat alarming looking object. The original purpose is of the large medallion is uncertain but theories of all sorts of uses have flown around for centuries: everything from a ceremonial well cover, to a piece of fountain decoration, to a manhole cover.

La Notte della Taranta is an annual music festival held in Salento, Apulia (or Puglia) and is the largest music festival in Italy. Established in 1998, it has grown and grown into the event it is today which has a fantastic international reputation and draws huge crowds each year.

Events take place in a variety of locations in the municipalities of the province of Lecce from the 5th of August culminating in a giant closing concert in Melpignano on August 22nd .
