Ischia is a volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is about 30 km from the city of Naples. The trapezoidal island is the largest of the Plegrean islands, and is a collection of six small communes.
The city is visited by thousands of tourists each year, especially for the natural thermal spas and volcanic mud found in the region. The locals can speak English and German very well for the benefit of the tourists.
The island was formed due to volcanic activity. However, the last eruption occurred in 1302 AD. The area was first inhabited during the Iron Age. It was ruled by many kings including the Etruscans, until the Romans occupied it in 322 BC.
