You probably already know how to open a bottle and drink a glass of wine... But do you know how to drink a glass OF Sicily?

The famous Sicilian winery "Tasca d'Almerita" has been declared 'Italian Winery of the Year' in the 2012 edition of Italy's bestselling wine guide, Vini d'Italia, published by Gambero Rosso. This is the second recognition in less than a month for Tasca d'Almerita, after the Italian Sommeliers' Association AIS named the company 'Sicilian Wine Producer of the Year' in its 2012 Duemilavini guide.

Their latest video "A glass of Sicily” has gone viral on YouTube, notching up well over 200,000 hits in less than a month.
Mount Etna

Somehow while touring the island I always end up in the area around the mount Etna, that marvelous and still active volcano - the biggest volcano "alive" in Europe actually.

And now I have more reasons to come back because I discovered a fabulous wine called Passopisciaro, this red wine is the result of pickings that they made from vineyards on the northern side of mount Etna. The grapes from these crus ripened in various moments from the 25th of October to the 8th of November, as they lie at 500, 600, 800 mt. a.s.l. so they harvest climbing up the slope of the volcano. Generally, the higher crus are on a more gravelly soil, the lower ones in a deeper powder made with more oxidized, older lavas.

Salute !

Vineyard

When thinking of Italy and wine, the world at large usually thinks of Chianti or Prosecco, sometimes Barolo.

But the twenty regions of Italy each produce wine, all based on traditions and grapes dating back to Roman and Etruscan times.

These wines are as varied and delightful as the regions and their inhabitants themselves.  Drinking just a good Chianti and saying you know Italian wine is like visiting Rome or Florence and saying you have visited all of Italy.

While it could take a lifetime to stroll up and down the peninsula and visit each little vineyard and taste every local varietal, the people at Ansa news have compiled a great primer to get you started along the 'backroads' of the Italian wine trail.  Be sure to check out their article and prepare for your vacation in Italy this summer!
