Trullo Ulivo

Trulli in Apulia

The aforementioned traditional buildings in Apulia are the distinctive trulli. These stone houses are unique to look at but are also unique to the region. Characterised by conical roofs often decorated with letters or symbols (love hearts are common), they are built without the use of any mortar, but, instead, from carefully stacked limestone blocks. Dating back to at least the 14th century, they have uncertain origins but have become an iconic part of the skyline of Alberobello and many other towns in Apulia, as well as being sprinkled throughout the countryside. Today they usually only make up part of a home, with maybe a bedroom tucked inside this cosy space.

Trulli Itaka

Among our listings in Apulia, we have several that are composed partially of trulli. There is the two-bedroom, two-bathroom Trullo Ulivo, starting at €145 per night; the four-bedroom, four-bathroom Trulli Itaka, starting at €366 per night; the two-bedroom, one-bathroom Trullo Quattro Carrini, starting at €171 per night; the two-bedroom, one-bathroom Trullo del Mandarino, starting at €185 per night; and the three-bedroom, two-bathroom Villa Trullino, starting at €174 per night, to name just some of our available options. All of these properties also boast a private pool for your exclusive use. Palazzo Trasimeno

Castles

Who hasn’t dreamed of living in a castle – even just for a little while? Well, you can make that dream a reality with Italy Villas! We have various castles dotted throughout the country that are available to be rented. From perfectly romantic little castles in Tuscany to the former home of a famous noble family in Umbria, there is a fairy tale escape perfectly suited to a destination wedding or a once-in-a-lifetime getaway in Italy for you and the old gang or the extended family!

Palazzo Trasimeno, though built by another family in the 14th century, eventually became home to members of the infamous Borgia family. An incredible gem, steeped in history, it boasts grand and plush luxury interiors, lots of period detail, 9 hectares of manicured grounds, direct views over Lake Trasimeno, and a private pool. Located 6km (or 4 miles) from Passignano Sul Trasimeno and 26km (16 miles) from Perugia in the Lake Trasimeno tourist area of Umbria, the castle can sleep up to 12 people comfortably in seven bedrooms with six bathrooms. Striking and impressive, this stunning stone castle allows guests to travel into the past while enjoying all of the mod-cons they could need.

Torre Di Montelopio

Torre Di Montelopio in Tuscany, meanwhile, is rather more pretty than imposing or striking. Set on an olive grove, this sweet little castle has an elegant stone front with a beautiful gate, charming courtyard, and a crenelated tower rising above everything else. Draped in greenery and flowers, with a private pool and lovely grounds, with historic and pretty yet comfortable interiors, this four-bedroom, four-bathroom property (sleeping up to eight in total), really does look like something that has come right out of a fairy tale.

Casa Farfalla

Unique Architectural One-Offs

Then there are our unique vacation rentals in Italy that are total one-offs. These are the properties that are best suited to those looking for truly special settings that are rather unlike anything else.

Casa Farfalla, built into a mountainside overlooking the city of Lucca, was designed by its owners, the artists, architects, and interior designers Michel and Donia Boucquillon. An acclaimed design, the villa has a roof that can be opened using a system of hydraulic pistons in order to ventilate and cool the building. It also has massive windows and doors that invite the outdoors in, chic modern interiors, and more. So, for those who love design, this is an incredible space to live within for a while, with room for up to twelve guests in six bedrooms, with five bathrooms. Additionally, there is a private pool, dining and lounging areas outdoors that take in those views, and a surrounding 10 hectares of land with olive groves and woods.

Torre Delle Cornacchie, interior

Torre Delle Cornacchie is an ancient tower with very chic and sleek interiors located just outside Rome. The unique combo of the historic building with the contemporary design of the interior – particularly in the wood-panelled living spaces, with its designer furniture, and careful use of art and antique pieces to accent the rooms – is especially striking. Sleeping up to four in two bedrooms with one bathroom, it also has lovely lush gardens with a private pool.
