A car in Italy

There are many destinations in Italy where you don’t need a car at all but there are also some where it’s kind of impossible to get around properly or easily without one and there are some where you could still enjoy a holiday without a car but you won’t be able to experience your destination of choice very thoroughly. If you have been dreaming of a stay in one of our villas in Italy but you’re wondering which of these categories that a particular destination may fall into then read on for our handy guide....

Cities

In the big cities, as with most places in the world, public transport is really all that you need in order to get around and there will almost always be great connections to and from the nearest airport. With Italy, in particular, there are some cities that can be harder to navigate by car due to parking or restricted zones and more. So, if you’re booking a vacation rental in Venice or a holiday rental in Rome or a villa in Florence and you intend to spend most of your time in the city in question, then we would say that you’re probably better off without a car. Even if you want to go on a day tip out of the city to a famous attraction (many people go to Pompeii for a day when in Rome, for example), there will likely be ample tour companies and bus services to these attractions to choose from.

Tuscany

If, however, you are booking a vacation rental in Tuscany and you are like most visitors to the region who want to spend a whole holiday exploring the wider region then we think a car is pretty unavoidable. While you may have train or bus services near your villa in Tuscany it can be hard and time-consuming to get to some places or you may need to make numerous service changes in order to get there, which can be tricky and confusing. Now, this is not to say that you might never avail of a train or a bus during your time in Tuscany but, to make the most of your time in the region, it is best to rent a car. Tuscany is varied, steeped in history, and full of things to see and do but not actually incredibly large, which means that those who have a car during their time in the area can really sink their teeth into this beloved tourist destination.

Sardinia

Similarly, we have Sardinia. You could easily enjoy a holiday during which you stayed in a plush villa in Sardinia, wandering the local town, hanging out by the sea or your pool, eating delicious local food and have a lovely time but if you wanted to actually see what makes this fascinating island so remarkable, then you’d really need to rent a car. Furthermore, as there have been shortages of car rentals in Sardinia over the last few years due to various reasons, it can be tricky to get a car. Therefore, when you book one of our holiday rentals in Sardinia, be sure to also secure your car rental as soon as is possible so that you won’t be stuck!

There are of course, many other destinations that we could speak of that would benefit a car rental or where you could readily do without if you are planning a vacation in Italy so keep your eyes peeled for our future guides on this topic and look forward to perfect holidays with Italy Villas!
