But What Are Trulli Exactly?
Trulli are immediately recognisable and distinctive stone houses that are unique to the region of Apulia. They are characterised by their conical roofs and can be seen dotted throughout the UNESCO-awarded historic centre of Alberobello as well as in some other spots in the region. Magical-looking and steeped in tradition, they are utterly charming and a stay in a trullo is a truly unforgettable experience, offering a remarkable blend of tradition, comfort, and undeniable style, making it an ideal choice for those seeking unique and authentic Italian holiday experiences. Of course, you do not have to actually stay in one yourself in order to appreciate these special Apulian architectural gems but it is pretty cool to stay in this kind of vacation rental in Alberobello if you ever get the opportunity!

And Where Did These Unique Architectural Gems Come From?
The trullo can be traced back centuries, to at least the 14th century. While there is still some uncertainty around their origins, it is thought that they came from the need for temporary storehouses and shelters as well as temporary dwellings for labuourers. One key story in their history states that they were created in their large numbers in Alberobello, in particular, due to quite a bizarre scenario. Supposedly, a feudal lord named Count Acquaviva moved peasants in to the area to help work the surrounding lands. However, as these new inhabitants wanted to avoid the taxes and laws to which towns in this area were beholden at the time, they decided that they would build trulli as their homes, which could be dismantled in a hurry and could not be classified as permanent structures as a result. So, Alberobello was not officially able to be classified as a town and local taxes or laws did not apply to them. It was not until centuries later, in 1797, that Alberobello was actually first officially recognised as a proper town!
Why Trulli Really Are Amazing Architectural Wonders.
A testament to the resourcefulness and creativity of the people of Apulia, trulli are built without the use of any mortar. Instead, carefully stacked limestone blocks form sturdy walls. Atop this feat of engineering then, are the immediately identifiable iconic conical roofs, which are also made with a unique technique that sees outer layers of stones stacked to curve inward and overlap. These roofs are then often decorated with intricate symbols and designs including hearts and other letters and patterns. The result is as whimsical as it is practical and impressive.

Explore Alberobello Thoroughly.
As noted, Alberobello’s stunning historic centre is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site due to its incredible architectural and historical heritage. Made up of a spiderweb of winding little streets and alleys with the distinctive conical roofs of trulli marking the skyline of the town as utterly singular, it is an immersive and enchanting place. Alberobello is divided into two districts, Rione Monti and Aia Piccola, and is home to a vast array of these extraordinary traditional structures that have been lovingly preserved and maintained over the centuries. Many are homes, some are part of churches and religious structures, and some house businesses such as shops.
