Owing its origins to Carlo Confidati, a businessman and garden-lover who fell in love with peonies in the 1990s, the garden was created when he brought back various examples from China to Italy. He began to plant them in a hilly area at the foot of the Cimini mountains and eventually created the Centro Botanico Moutan (from the Chinese term "Mu Dan", tree peony). After continuing to grow, it has become the rarest and largest collection of tree and herbaceous peonies in the world and even sells the plants now today.
