While many travel restrictions have now been lifted worldwide, those planning a vacation in Italy this summer might be wondering about if there are any entry and travel requirements in place in the country that they need to be aware of. Italy was the first European country to have recorded instances of COVID-19 in early 2020 and throughout the pandemic it is a destination in which some of the strictest safety countermeasures were put in place and maintained to fight the virus. These various measures and restrictions were also kept in place for longer and up until more recently than in many other places throughout the globe. As the majority of the other EU countries have ended their entry rules and due to the low infection rates and high vaccination rates that have been recorded in Italy as of recently, the government has decided to follow suit. Italy now joins 19 other EU countries who have already dropped all of their restrictions including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden, and Switzerland. So, from tomorrow – the 1st of June 2022 – many of the last of these remaining restrictions and requirements will be lifted, just in time for the beginning of the summer 2022 holiday season.
Entry requirements.
Up until today – the 31st of May 2022 – the entry requirements that necessitated all people arriving into the country aged six and over to produce a valid Digital COVID Certificate (or some other accepted equivalent) that showed either vaccination with the primary vaccination series having taken place in the past 9 months, recovery from COVID-19 in the past 180 days, a negative antigen test that had been taken up to 48 hours before entry into the country, or a negative molecular test that had been taken up to 72 hours before entry into Italy remained in place. However, as of the 1st of June, this will be lifted and everyone will be permitted restriction-free entry into the country. Those without the Digital COVID Certificate will now be allowed access to Italy without the need to travel to their final destination in Italy via a private transport method, to self-isolate for 5 days, to call the COVID-19 - Regional telephone information hotline and notify the Prevention Department of the local health authority of entry into Italy, or the need to take another PCR test.
Passenger Locator Form.
The Passenger Locator Form requirement was also officially dropped on the 1st of May 2022 and no longer applies to travellers who are entering Italy.
Masks and the Green Pass system.
Masks are now no longer mandatory in the vast majority of public spaces in Italy except on public transport and in schools. The Green Pass system that was put into place last year when Italy first reopened its borders to tourists and which allowed only those who met certain requirements access to various facilities and attractions (such as restaurants and museums) has now also been lifted, leaving all those visiting Italy free to pretty much go where they want and do what they want as they please.
NOTE: Please always check with official sources just ahead of the beginning of your trip as these rules and restrictions are subject to change depending on the current situation. These are the current guidelines but we are not an official governmental body and there may be alterations after this has been published, though we always try to stay up-to-date.
