5 Reasons To Plan A Vacation In Comacchio

While the region of Emilia-Romagna is famous for towns like Ferrara, Ravenna, Bologna, and Modena, among others, there are obviously some lesser-known gems that are well worth exploring, particularly if you want to get away from the regular tourist crowds. One such destination is the charming town of Comacchio, known as the, “Little Venice,” of Emilia-Romagna. 1. Food festivals in October and seafood specialties

No matter where you are holidaying in Italy, food is always an important part of your trip but if you are visiting Comacchio, in particular, and you are a serious foodie and an eel fan, especially, then you should plan a fall getaway in the town. The first two weekends of October sees the town host a food festival dedicated to the eel and there are all sorts of tastings, demonstrations, shows, parties, and celebrations to be stumbled across throughout the streets, plus lots of delicious foods to purchase, try, learn more about, and savour. In addition to the popular eel, other key ingredients and dishes in Comacchio include appetizers made of scallops, mantis shrimp, and clams; meals such as fisherman's risotto and spaghetti with crabs or prawns; mixed grilled seafood plates with eels and polenta; other freshly-caught and perfectly prepared fish such as sole, mullet, brill, bream, and stuffed squid; and the DOC wine produced in the area, Bosco Eliceo. A key destination on the “Via Delta Road and part of the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori gastronomic trail, Comacchio is a known destination for gourmands and absolutely essential for those who love seafood.

2. “Little Venice”

As noted before, Comacchio is often described as a, “Little Venice,” and is home to a network of canals that were built to make use of the Po Delta and take advantage of its position along the river. Exploring the town today, you will discover a picturesque maze of canals crossed by little bridges and lined with terrace houses in pastel shades – utterly lovely! Tours of the canals on the traditional batane (the small flat-keeled boats that were the main mode of transport in town until a few decades ago) are a perfect way to appreciate the great aesthetic appeal of this charming town and to relax while on your vacation in Emilia Romagna. Better yet, a ride on these batane is part of a free service offered by volunteers located at moorings around the Trepponti Bridge, the famous symbol of Comacchio.

3. The wonderful architectural gems

In addition to the pretty canals, there are an array of astounding architectural gems located around Comacchio. Head to the Ponte delgi Sbirri and you can take in three of the most important examples from one spot: the Ospedale degli Infermi, a neoclassical beauty built between 1778 and 1784 by Pope Clement XIV according to the designs of Venetian architect Antonio Foschini and the Ferrarese architect Gaetano Genta and inaugurated in 1811 that is now home to the Delta Antico Museum, boasting a collection of some two thousand finds dating from the protohistory to the Middle Ages; the elegant 19th century Palazzo Bellini that houses the Gallery of Contemporary Art, the historical archive, the town's library, and offices of the department of cultural institutions; as well as the 17th century Trepponti (Three Bridges) Bridge, or Ponte Pallotta, composed of five large staircases and designed by Luca Danese of Ravenna that connects the city center with the Pallotta canal coming in from the sea. Other famous monuments in town include the lovely 17th century Cathedral of San Cassiano, the Loggia del Grano, and the Clock Tower but there is a long list of gorgeous buildings to be viewed in the well-preserved and picture-perfect historic centre of town.
