Of course, while there are endless different institutions and venues to visit all over the romantic city of Venice, one of the newest and coolest art spaces among them has to be the Fondazione Prada in the Ca' Corner della Regina (or Palazzo Corner della Regina).

Opened in May of 2021, the Fondazione Prada took on a space in the building back in 2011 for their Venetian branch of their art program and then spent years restoring their various rooms meticulously before opening them as an engaging and fascinating new art venue in the city. Also home to the History Archives of the Contemporary Art Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia, this incredible 18th century building is a lovely and striking place in which to display and observe exhibitions.
Named for Caterina Cornaro, who became Queen of Cyprus by marriage and was born in the gothic palace that predated the current building on the site in the 15th century, the present palace was built in second half of the 17th century by Giuseppe Sardi and then reconstructed between 1724 and 1728 by Domenico Rossi for the Corner (or Cornaro) family. Located in the Sestiere Santa Croce, overlooking the Grand Canal, the palace features an elegant white Baroque façade and echoes the design of the nearby Ca' Pesaro by the great Venetian Baroque master Baldassare Longhena. Notably, on the interior, on the piano noblie, there are a series of frescoes depicting various episodes from the life of the building's namesake, Queen Caterina. Commissioned Caterino Cornaro, who was a distant descendant of the queen, the paintings were completed by artists Constantino Cedini, Vincenzo Colomba, and Domenico Fossati.

Home to the Corner family until the 19th century, the last Corner heir was a priest who left the building to the Papal authorities in his will. Used for various purposes by the Church, it then came to house the Biennale History Archives in the 1970s. Since additionally becoming the Venetian headquarters of the Fondazione Prada in 2011, the palace has housed eight different art projects and exhibitions and the foundation continues to undertake a large scale and detailed restoration of the building which was drawn up in line with the directives of the Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici e Paesaggistici di Venezia e della Laguna and is being developed in several phases. Currently (until November the 21st 2021), the venue is playing host to Peter Fischli's, “Stop Painting,” an exhibition that looks at how technological advances have both killed and rebirthed painting and displays over 110 works by 80 different artists across the first floor of the building.

A fascinating exhibition and a stunning venue, this incredible art space is a must-see if you are a serious art-lover who has found a vacation rental in Venice and you are looking for some of the most interesting art experiences in Italy.
