Lake Garda is a major attraction for anyone who has found a vacation rental in any one of the three regions in which it has shorelines. Just find a villa in Trentino, a holiday rental in Lombardy, or a vacation rental in Veneto and come explore this famous beauty and all that it has to offer; from water sports to boat tours, from drinking a glass of wine while enjoying sunset over the lake to picnicking at scenic spots, from exploring different historic villas dotted around the various islands and lakeside villages to hiking around trails located all over the area, and much more besides. If you are interested in hiking, in particular, you are in luck. There are lots of interesting trails to choose from and the most incredible backdrops to enjoy while you’re out there hiking. One of the best routes to explore is the Strada del Ponale.

A road that was built in the second half of the 19th century, the Strada del Ponale was replaced by a modern tunnel in recent years and was officially closed to traffic in 1990. The road was then reopened in 2004 as a route for cyclists and hikers to enjoy. Connecting the Riva del Garda and the Valle di Ledro, it stretches for 10km and is one of the most beautiful old panoramic roads in Europe. It is one of the biggest attractions in the Upper Lake Garda area and for a good reason: the views afforded from the Strada are truly astounding and it really is an excellent place for hiking. Part asphalt and part gravel road, with sharp bends, and lots of narrow points along the route, it was a rather dangerous road for traffic but has now found a great new purpose as a cycling and hiking route. It was clearly meant to be!
So, if you’re exploring Lake Garda and this part of Italy be sure to come and hike along the Strada del Ponale to make the most of this famously beautiful setting.
