San Fruttuoso is a tiny little bay along the coastline of Liguria that is a truly magical place. It is completely tucked away, accessible only by boat or by foot, and, as a result, often goes unknown to most who have found a vacation rental in Liguria and are exploring the area. Overlooked by a beautifully preserved Benedictine monastery that is topped by a tower with a small dome and home to the hidden Christ of the Abyss, a spectacular bronze statue 15 metres under the water a few hundred metres away, it boasts two rather extraordinary attractions in a very small area.
In addition to these treasures, however, the beach of San Fruttuoso is also a great reason to visit. While it is small, it is utterly picturesque because of its majestic surroundings – the lush green vegetation, little pebbly shore, and bright umbrellas and loungers and it also boasts perfectly clear and beautiful waters. Said waters are excellent for scuba diving in and there are schools around San Fruttuoso where you can take lessons or rent equipment to get a close-up look at the Christ of the Abyss for yourself. There is a replica in the church next to the monastery but it cannot compare to actually seeing the submerged original with your own eyes. If you're not quite up for diving, those crystalline waters are still ideal for swimming and splashing around in and snorkelling is also always an option. Be warned, however, it can get busy at the height of the season during afternoons.
To get to this impossibly beautiful and romantic bay, you can take a boat from Camogli, Portofino, and Santa Margherita. You can also simply make your way there on foot from Portofino if you are prepared for a walk and reasonably fit and want to take in the beauty of the surrounding landscape in this lovely part of Italy.
