Galleria Umberto I
This week, we have discussed the beautiful southern region of Campania and how it makes for a perfect holiday destination. A vacation rental in Campania or a villa rental on the Amalfi Coast makes for a perfect base from which to explore the rich historical and culinary cultures, the stunning landscapes and coastal areas, and the incredibly relaxed way of life of Campania. From here, you can make your way to the regional capital of Naples on a day trip and get a taste of this vibrant, ancient, and fascinating city. With lots of surprises, hidden gems, and magical places to be discovered, it is well worth setting aside some time to explore this city. If you do, you will stumble upon incredible places like the Galleria Umberto I.
The Galleria Umberto I is a public shopping gallery located directly across from the San Carlo opera house, a short distance from the harbour. Inspired by the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan in Milan, it was built between 1887–1891, during a period of rebuilding and revival in the city that lasted until the beginning of WWI. Named for Umberto I, King of Italy at the time of construction, it is a shopping mall and retail space in the grand Italian tradition and a stunning architectural gem. Part of the UNESCO listing of the Historic Centre of Naples as a World Heritage Site, it is a magical creation of glass and iron that was designed by Emanuele Rocco and Francesco Paolo Boubèe as a covered passageway that would connect the San Carlo Theatre to Via Roma.

As a public space, the Galleria Umberto I has had periods of popularity and neglect among the Neapolitans but has remained a stunning gem to tourists right through from creation to the modern day. If you are exploring the city and looking for somewhere to grab a coffee, this is the most opulent and impressive space to sit and sip away a drink after wandering the luxurious space and shops within.
