The elegant city of Turin is home to some stunning cultural institutions and museums that showcase extraordinary works of art in permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. Opened at GAM on the 26th of October 2018 and running until the 24th of March 2019, the exhibition displays over 80 works that have been loaned by some of Italy's best and most important museums, institutions and private collections and was curated by Cristina Acidini and Virginia Bertone. The exhibition not only outlines the timeline of the movement but further gives context to and explains the importance of the Macchiaioli: a group of artists in Tuscany in the second half of the nineteenth century who predated and were akin to the Impressionists, though their aims and motivations were somewhat different. They broke with the conventions of Italian academic art at the time and painted outdoors, capturing natural light, shade and colour. Some of the most important names among them include Giuseppe Abbati, Cristiano Banti, Odoardo Borrani, Vincenzo Cabianca, Adriano Cecioni, Vito D'Ancona, Serafino De Tivoli, Giovanni Fattori, Raffaello Sernesi, Silvestro Lega, and Telemaco Signorini.
Their work was key in shifting and modernising Italian art and this exhibition shines a light on the movement and artists and establishes a telling dialogue between Macchiaioli painting and the wonderful 19th-century collections of the GAM. Beginning with their foundations, comparing their works to those of academic painters, exploring their experiments, “the exhibition offers visitors not only the chance to appreciate absolute masterpieces of Macchiaioli painting, but also to gain a better understanding of their work by stressing the importance of the dialogue that united artists from different parts of Italy through research that aimed for the modern”.
