While there aren't all that many traditional tourist sights or monuments on Ponza, Italy there are things to see and do on this beautiful island. A long time favourite holiday destination of Romans, it has a lot to offer and makes for a wonderful spot to vacation. Just find a holiday rental in Latium and then spend even just a day discovering this gem for yourself.
One of the things that is most attractive about the island is the selection of stunning beaches and there are some seriously great ones to choose from such as Chiaia di Luna, a pretty pale crescent of sand lapped by aquamarine waters and Lucia Rosa with its incredible sunsets.
The whole island is a perfect seaside destination where there are a wealth of diving companies to choose from and a seabed lined with ancient Roman ships, sunken World War II steamship remnants and a diverse wildlife to discover.

Or, if you prefer staying above water, there are plenty of opportunities to sail around Ponza and the other Pontine islands, as well. You can also head out on excursions and visit and hike the nature reserve of Zannone or explore the Grotte di Pilato, three caves where the Romans dug fishpools to raise fish for consumption. In addition, there are mule-tracks to wander, and ruins like the remains of a Roman port at Santa Maria and a Roman necropolis to discover.
There are a couple of more traditional tourist attractions, as well, even if they aren't plentiful. One is the Giardino Botanico Ponziano, the Botanic Garden of Ponza, which is a private botanical garden located on Villa Madonna collina Belvedere. Established in the 1980s by Dr. Biagio Vitiello, it is home to woody plants typical of the Pontine Islands that are now threatened, a collection of wild orchids, and rare endangered flowering plants, among other plants and flowers. Open to the public and with guided tours available, it is another picturesque spot on the island.

The other big landmark is the beautiful Faro della Guardia, a historic 19th century lighthouse located on a cliff overlooking the glimmering Tyrrhenian Sea. While it is privately owned and not open to the public, it makes for a great hiking destination and some stunning photographs.
So, while there may not be the long list of things to see and do that other destinations can boast, there is plenty to keep you occupied on Ponza. To learn more about the island, be sure to read through all of our series of posts on Ponza.
