If you are a dog lover and have found a vacation rental in Campania, we have the ultimate tourist attraction for you! Foof, located in a coastal town called Mondragone in the Caserta province of Campania, about 45km north of Naples, is a dog museum. It is, in fact, the first dog museum in Italy and was opened very recently, back in 2013.
Named after a German Shepherd that the architect of the lovely museum building, Vito Luigi Pellegrino owned and loved as a boy, the museum is built on the site of a former kennel. It has developed into something far more complex and is so much more than that today. Composed of a small museum that explores topics such as famous dogs, the history of dogs, the cultural context and the relationship between man and dog at work, play, companionship, technology, art and popular culture; a dog-themed park for kids to play in; and a sanctuary full of adorable dogs, waiting to be adopted.
The museum is home to all sorts of fascinating pieces such as a 35 million-year-old fossil of a dog from America, movie posters from films that have starred dogs and works of art by famous artists such as the likes of Jeff Koons and is housed in a stunning modern gallery that beautifully complements its natural surroundings. The outdoor space, meanwhile, is composed of seventy thousand square metres of greenery and the dogs that live in the sanctuary have large spaces to fun around and play until they are adopted. If you cannot take a dog home with you, you can still play with the dogs, pet them and take them for walks.
Entrance to the museum and park costs just 5 euros for adults and 3 for children and goes towards taking care of the pups! So, if you want to spend some money on a fun attraction and a great day out, all at the same time, it is a must-visit destination.
