There are some incredibly famous Italian island getaway destinations. Among them, we have the likes of Elba, Ischia, Capri and the whole of the regions of Sicily and Sardinia. However, one of the lesser-known – but no less beautiful – island destinations, at least outside of Italy itself, is Ponza. This is where the Romans vacation and escape to during the hottest summer months and they have been doing so for an incredibly long time now. They've just been keeping stumm about it all this while to keep the beautiful island to themselves.
Of course, in this day and age of the internet, there really are no perfectly kept secrets anymore and people do know about the island. In fact, Rihanna, Bruce Springsteen, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé and Jay-Z have all holidayed there in recent years. Yet, despite this, the island has remained relatively unknown to international tourists and is a wonderful enclave of authenticity. A small gem, it is unlike the party islands of Ibiza or Mykonos but is rather a relaxed and unpretentious place where the lifestyle is carefree and simple. As a result, it makes for the perfect place to sit back and truly unwind. Just find a vacation rental in Latium and even head over for just a day, it is utterly worth the trip!

There are bars, restaurants and, even, nightclubs but there is none of the intense tourist trade or industrialisation that can plague other island resorts. It isn't even especially well-settled. Buildings are scattered loosely over the thin, hilly island and are only really at the port, known as the “Porto” or Ponza. Here you'll find the most picturesque part of the island; a crescent of pastel-coloured historic buildings and bright sail boats framed by bluer than blue waters, beaches and lush greenery.
