Come See The Historic Procession Of The Magi In Milan

Procession of the Magi
One of the most important traditions of Milan during Christmas holidays is the Procession of the Magi, which takes place on the 6th of January each year. A large number of people take part in this incredible traditional procession, starting from the central Duomo and making their way, through the city, to end at the Basilica of Sant’Eustorgio. Featuring vibrant costumes, dancers, singers, a circus and the festive spirit, the whole thing is a wonderful spectacle that is a must for anyone who has found a vacation rental in Milan!
After a Christmas well spent – eating too much, seeing family and friends and relaxing – why not round off the season with a trip to Milan? There are plenty of things to see and do, including visiting the city's incredible historic Christmas markets and joining in on the city-wide New Year's celebrations and, then, there is this unique parade through the city.

The 6th of January is Epiphany, a celebration of the day that the Three Wise Men arrived at the stable to deliver their gifts to the baby Jesus and Milan celebrates this popular Italian holiday more vibrantly than anyone else. Beginning at the city's amazing Gothic cathedral, the event starts of with the Three Kings, (traditionally an old man, a young man and a black man) leading the procession on horseback. A crowd of knights, shepherds, dames and common people, all in costume, follow.

They make their way to the Basilica Dan Lorenzo, one of the oldest churches in Milan, which marks the half way point of the procession and commemorates the meeting of the Three Kings with King Herod. It then ends at Sant’Eustorgio Basilica, which once housed the relics of the Magi, stolen from the Holy Land by the saint to whom it is dedicated. Here, there is a Grotto of the Nativity set up in the churchyard and speeches and celebrations round off the event.

If you are spending time over the festive period on Milan, be sure to check out this fun and sumptuous affair for yourself!
