Maiella (or Majella) National Park is located across Chieti, L’Aquila and Abruzzo and is a mountainous nature reserve centered around the Maiella calcareous massif.

The vast park is composed of 9 nature reserves: Monte Rotondo Nature Reserve, Bosco di S. Antonio, Quarto Santa Chiara, Majella Orientale, Fara San Martino Palombaro, Feudo Ugni, Piana Grande della Majelletta, Valle dell’Orfento and Lama Bianca di Sant’Eufemia a Maiella. It is unique area of incredible wilderness that is populated by stunning views and an unbelievably rich wildlife and variation of vegetation.

This park is home to around 37% of all Italian vegetation species and is populated by a rich wildlife that includes: wild boars, hares, chamois, deer, weasels, martens, wild cats, Eurasian lynxes, porcupines, black bears, otters, Apennine wolves, dormice, skunks, hedgehogs, greater horseshoe bats, badgers, moles, mouse-eared Geoffroy, foxes and many others.

Among these creatures many are protected species that are hard to see elsewhere.

Majella National Park is where you will find one of the most impressive and extensive mountain ranges of the Apennines, containing more than 30 peaks higher than 2000m and Mount Amaro among them, the second highest peak of the Apennines.

The entirety of the Park consists of four main areas: Majella, a wide and compact calcareous massif; Morrone; Porrara; and Monti Pizzi, with the valleys and the karst planes interposing between them.
