
Perugia was an important production centre for art in the Renaissance and from which many great masters emerged. It continues to be a city that values art to this day and is even home to one of the best art galleries in the country, though it might be less well-known than others in bigger cities such as Florence and Rome. The impressive number and variety of artworks housed in the gallery include a range of objects from paintings on wood, canvas and murals, to sculptures in wood and stone and, even, goldsmith's art and fabrics and span a period from the 13th all the way to the 19th centuries. Displayed and arranged in chronological order the collection further emphasises the sense of development and evolution of art in the area over the ages. It includes some very famous names and, in particular, important masterpieces with works by Arnolfo di Cambio, Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Duccio di Boninsegna, Gentile da Fabriano, Beato Angelico, Benozzo Gozzoli and Piero della Francesca. Particular emphasis is placed on the Umbrian artists present such as Benedetto Bonfigli, Bartolomeo Caporali and Fiorenzo di Lorenzo. Perugino, Pintoricchio, their students and followers are given even more special consideration.

Also on display are the works of Sienese goldsmiths, traditional Perugian tablecloths, ceramic floor tiles produced from the 15th and 16th century and a rare collection of drawings, including a precious sanguine study by Federico Barocci.
