The Napoleonic Road (Strada Napoleonica) has been an integral part of Trieste since its construction began in 1821. It is a 5km-long path outside the city, joining the Italian countryside from Opicina to the region of Prosecco. This route offers the best view to the sea and the Gulf of Trieste and, if you’re on the ball, you can catch one of the most beautiful sunsets in the country here as well. It is the perfect place to take a break from dashing around museums and attractions to spend some time outdoors, take in some fresh air and immerse yourself in the extraordinary beauty of this part of the world. Just find a vacation rental in Friuli Venezia Giulia and spend time exploring the city of Trieste and the wonders that surround it, such as the Napoleonic Road.

The path is known as the Napoleonic Road because, according to legend, it was built by Napoleon's troops and it is well loved by the people of Trieste. It is an especially popular site for families, friends and locals on Sundays in the spring and autumn but an equally attractive option is to come during the summer and follow the locals for a dip in the Bacola beach, lying near the bottom of the road once you’ve taken a stroll or hiked along the route. People also come here to run and climb on the rocky outcrops which are on either side of the path. Being exposed to the sun and protected from the wind, it's also a very pleasant itinerary even in the cold winter days.

If you want to get further immersed into the culture and history of Trieste, begin your visit in the centre of Trieste. Head to the central square of Piazza Oberdan where you’ll find the famous and beloved tramway Tram de Opcina. Still up and running after a century of active service, it has a special place in the heart of locals and tourists find this original means of transportation an unforgettable moment of their visit of Trieste. The tram car bearing no. 411 is the oldest tram still running in Europe today. Along the way you'll enjoy a particular view over the city. When you arrive to Villa Opicina you can begin your trek along the Napoleonic Road where you can take in views across the Gulf of Trieste and a vast part of the city.
When spending time in Friuli Venezia Giulia, there is no better activity for getting out and about and taking in the great beauty of the region than taking a pleasant stroll along the Napoleonic Road.
