Celebrated in several towns in the region of Abruzzo such as Lanciano, L’Aquila, Sulmano and Villavallelonga since the Middle Ages it is a giant feast which sees participants eat a large number of courses. People are known to eat up to 30 courses and to eat right from one day and through into the next.

The Legend goes that the feast goes back to the Middle Ages when the mother of a newborn child went to fetch water from the town well. When she returned, she was horrified to see her child in the mouth of a wolf. Helpless, she could only pray and call on St Anthony for help. Hearing her prayer, St Anthony came to her rescue and the wolf released the child. The woman, being so grateful for this miracle, promised to serve a long feast to others in celebration of the event and this feast went on to become known as La Panarda.

When you attend the festival, you’ll note the unbelievable generosity of the Abruzzese people and an energy that cannot be compared. Families and friends all gather together to eat, drink, chat and sing. The whole celebration is loud, crazy and a little chaotic but in the best possible way and it offers the chance to experience a very Italian get-together. This often includes dancers, musicians, actors and performers who sing, dance, play instruments, act, wear elaborate costumes and have trained animals do routines.
