There are 118 islands that make up the lagoon city of Venice and many of its outer ones are superb spots to soak up some traditional Venetian culture. It’s quite interesting for tourists to discover that many of the small outer islands of Venice often played particular roles in contributing to the city’s infrastructure and operations.
One island called Sant’ Erasmo for example is nicknamed ‘The Orchard of Venice’. Boats piled high with freshly picked fruit and vegetables leave this island every morning to supply the rest of Venice.
