Some of Italy’s and even Europe’s most important governmental decisions were made here over the centuries. The Doge’s Palace of Venice served firstly as the residence of the Doge or Italian Grand Duke but also served as a place where important matters of justice were settled.
The Doge's Palace
The Doge’s Palace began construction in the 9th century and was designed almost like a castle with strong defences due to its strategic positions close to the open sea. It displays a striking Venetian gothic style but is warmed by the colours decorated its exterior and interior walls and ceilings.

The people of Venice loved their palace and saw it as a place of fair justice and a warm welcome should they have any issues. They held great power in influencing major decisions which is one of the main reasons it successfully remained as a place of governance for so many centuries.
