Wander Through The Historic Centre Of Bologna

Piazza Maggiore, Bologna
Why not find a great holiday rental in the Emilia-Romagna area and take a day to explore the streets of Bologna?

There may be lots to do in the area but if you find yourself in Bologna, find time to wander the city centre. The town is circular in plan with the iconic Due Torri, or Two Towers, at the centre and streets radiating outwards to what exists of the city walls and twelve medieval city gates. Two interconnected sites in the area, the Piazza Delle Sette Chiese and Corte Isolani, make for an especially nice stroll – just watch out for the cobblestones if someone in your party is wearing high heels!
Corte Isolani, Bologna
Casa Isolani, with its grand timber-supported façade is one of the rare surviving Medieval features of the city. The building, so named for the influential senatorial family who built and still own it, was restored in the 20th century and adapted into a complex of buildings now known as the Corte Isolani.

This covered public walkway connects the original structure on the Strada Maggiore through to another of the main streets of the city, the Via Santo Stefano. On this side is the façade of the Palazzo Isolani, overlooking the Piazza Delle Sette Chiese. Built between 1451 and 1455, it marks a stylistic transition in style from the late Roman-Gothic and Tuscan Renaissance architecture.
Basilica di Santo Stefano, Bologna
The complex was opened to the public in 1999 and today houses a sprinkling of charming upscale boutiques and restaurants. It provides a unique and concentrated example of the historical development of architecture in Bologna alongside an exciting contemporary shopping and dining experience.

After you experience the Corte Isolani, you can walk out into the Piazza Santo Stefano, more commonly referred to as the Piazza Delle Sette Chiese. So-called due to the complex of seven churches housed which enclose one corner of the piazza, it is a popular space that often hosts cultural events, festivals and concerts.

The seven churches date to a range of historical periods from the 4th up to the 13th centuries and the basilica is said to have been inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Several other palaces face onto the piazza which is regarded as one of the best landmarks of the city.

Take the time to see this historic and pleasant little corner of the city and of Emilia-Romagna and you won't be disappointed.
