See One Of The Most Active Volcanoes In The World At Stromboli

Stomboli is a small island to the north of Sicily and contains one of the three most active volcanoes in the world. It has regular but small explosions which cast out glowing lava. This has been taking place for at least 2000 years, with written records going back that far, and is unique among the volcanoes of the world. Due to the reliability of activity and the generally small explosions with a lack of serious danger, it has become a major tourist attraction and draws thousands of visitors each year, hoping to see a volcano in action. Stromboli is known as "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean” and most of its activity consists of brief bursts of glowing lava fragments, cast to heights of between 100 and 200m above the craters. Sometimes there are stronger explosions or, even, periods of more greater activity. In the past 100 years, explosions in 1919, 1930 and 2003, were large enough to take lives and or destroy property inside the inhabited areas in the vicinity.

At Stromboli, visitors can watch its eruptions from the rim of an older crater, 150-250m above the active craters.

However, don't worry, this is seen as surprisingly safe. There is a minute risk of being involved in the sudden, larger explosions that happen a few times a year. However, if you look at the odd, the risk is probably much smaller than many others in everyday situations. The number of accidents on Stromboli compared to the number of visitors is extremely small.

Many even find Stomboli to be a magical place, not just because of the volcano but because of the beautiful beaches, lush vegetation and unspoiled landscape. At night, it creates an astounding light as lava flows and explosions make the mountain come alive.

You can take boats or ships to the island from nearby ports and spend a day wandering around the island and volcano. Be warned, however, you're going to have to do a lot of walking and hiking as cars are not allowed on the island.
