One of the first things that comes to mind when most people think of Rome is the Colosseum and one of the first things that comes to mind when thinking of the Romans is gladiators. It is fair to say, then, that gladiatorial games are one of the city's defining heritages. Visiting the Colosseum should be done at least once in a lifetime but for something more unique and a little off the beaten track, why not enroll in Gladiator School?

The school is not based in the Colosseum but not too far away either, on the Appian Way, or Via Appia Antica. Interestingly, this was not only one of the most important roads of the Roman Empire but also the road along which followers of Spartacus himself were crucified.
It can be a bit tricky to locate the school, however, as it is a very long street and runs right out of the city. The school is number 18 and is located down a dirt track which is opposite a bus stop. Outside, a home-made sign reading “Scuola di Gladiatora” will let you know that you're at the right spot!

It is open all year with lessons beginning at 9am and the last class of the day at 7pm, for two hour sessions throughout the day. The classes are taught by members of the Historic Group of Rome, who specialize in the re-enactment of Roman life and gladiatorial combat, and who opened the school in 1999.
Sessions begin in the Gladiator School museum which is full of authentic accessories used in ancient gladiator fights, such as helmets, weapons and clothing. After an explanation and tour, each participant will be given a new name as a gladiator to be used for the rest of the lesson. Then an instructor will teach you how to fight with authentic weapons used by the gladiators of ancient Rome.
You'll also take part in (a slightly less demanding version of) gladiatorial training while dressed in a toga (over your own clothes), sandals and a wooden training sword called a “rudis”. Using this sword, you'll be shown the basic techniques of attack and defence before moving on to the “gladius”, the heavier sword which gave gladiators their name. Sometimes, you'll also be shown the “Retiarius” technique which involves fighting with a net and trident. Finally, you'll take to a small arena and compete in a tournament with one winner crowned and certificates for everyone who took place.
The minimum age is six but it's a fun day out for people of all ages. Those who don't wish to participate can watch and everyone can say they had a unique and fun experience in Rome! You can book the Gladiator School through Viator.
