Pier at Civitavecchia
Surfing probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Italy and the country is not particularly well-known for having good swells. However, there are plenty of beautiful beaches all over Italy and you may get the urge to go surfing while spending time by the sea. One particularly nice area for surfing in Italy is at Civitavecchia in Lazio. Not only is the town charming and full of things to do and see, but you can often catch quite good waves and there are a few surfing schools in the area. The beaches along this stretch are also picturesque with impossibly blue waters and beautiful and historic buildings overlooking it all.

Civitavecchia means “Ancient Town” and it was originally an Etruscan settlement which was later developed by the Romans. Today, it is a sea port town which is located 80km from Rome, on the Tyrrhenian coast. The harbour is formed by two piers and a breakwater with a pretty lighthouse adorning it. One of the most distinctive features along the coastline and skyline of the town is the impressive Forte Michelangelo which was commissioned by Pope Julius II from Bramante in the 16th century to defend the Port of Rome. The building was finished under Michelangelo.

To the north of the city are the Terme Taurine baths which were popular thermal baths in the time of the Romans and which continue to be a favourite of locals. Another famous sight in the area is the giant Unconditional Surrender statue which depicts the famous V-J Day In Times Square kiss.

In addition to all of this the West Coast, from Civitavecchia to Naples, delivers the best conditions for surfing in Italy with the north-west swells being one of the best to get waves in the country. Civitavecchia, in particular, is one of the few places in Italy to consistently get good tubes.

Nearby, at the beach of Tarquinia you can expect clean water, good surf and the heartland of the Italian surf community. In fact, it will feel like you have left Italy and gone somewhere much more exotic! For history, striking monuments and good surfing, this corner of Lazio is one of the best places to go in all of Italy!
