Come to the picturesque town of Venaria Reale near Turin city in Piedmont where a splendid palace began construction in 1675.

The Palace of Venaria was once the home of royalty and is counted among the vast UNESCO site encompassing the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy.

Stay in a beautiful vacation rental in Piedmont where you can easily travel around to see the glorious attractions of this beautiful region!

A wealthy Duke called Charles Emmanuel the Second commissioned the architect Amedeo di Castellamonte to build him a lavish palace as he needed a base from which to conduct his hunting expeditions nearby.

Unfortunately during the Siege of Turin in 1706, parts of La Venaria Reale palace was badly damaged and during the battles between Napoleon’s French army against Italy and other countries, it was converted into a barracks and training grounds by his troops. It retained this role until 1978, at that stage, long under Italian military rule and massive restoration works have taken place and opened to the public in 2007.

La Venaria Reale is a stunning example of Italian architecture with elaborate stone embellishments framing the interior and exterior walls. Two towers stand at either end of the front façade of the palace and are connected by a huge decorative corridor called Diana’s Gallery.
18th Century St. Umberto's church
Sadly the original gardens no longer exist as they were removed to make way for military training ground. La Venaria Reale palace was once a luxury art haven that held many artistic treasures within its walls but during its time as an army barracks, much of it was removed. Some remain behind to be admired by tourists as they walk through the many rooms, halls and corridors of this architectural masterpiece.

A modern style garden has been created here and the church of Sant’ Uberto was a late addition in the 18th century. He was the patron saint of hunting and so had pride of place in the site’s original purpose of animal hunting in the surrounding countryside.

Tourists wishing to explore La Venaria Reale in its entirely can do so for an admission price of €25. Children between the ages of 6-15 can enter for only €1. The palace is open every day except Mondays and would be an incredible place to add to your cultural travel plans of Piedmont!
