Learn about the interesting life and times of Bolsena’s patron Saint, Santa Cristina at an honorary festival in July. A beautiful old church dedicated to this saint also details her unfortunate gruesome end. Located close to Bolsena is the ancient pilgrim route leading to Rome called Via Francigena. There’s an interesting story of an old priest travelling to Rome who stopped off to pray at the tomb of Saint Cristina in Bolsena.

As he knelt, he noticed a fast flow of blood flowing from the tomb, staining his garments. From that day forth, Bolsena has become an important pilgrimage destination in its own right because of this story.
