The cuisine of Vicenza is quite simple but delicious. Be sure to order a colourful platter of local cheese, fruits and salamis to savour along with a robust red wine in an outdoor cafe in the city centre. The local Asiago cheese is especially flavoursome and would be an integral part of any antipasti in the area.
The oldest food preservation tradition in the world is practiced here. Fish such as cod are preserved by drying in cold air in specially built huts. This is a cheap and sustainable alternative to salting or smoking fish and has a storage life of several years. It’s delicious eaten along with some plump juicy olives and a generous drizzle with olive oil.
Compliment this symphony of flavours with a crisp sparkling white wine in an authentic restaurant as you gaze out on the quaint old streets of the city.

An interesting fact about the area is that the people of Vicenza have been jokingly nicknamed ‘Mangiagatti’ which means ‘Cat Eaters’ ever since the extreme food shortages of World War Two.
The problem of stray cats diminished greatly during this time as people struggled to get by on what little food they had. Thankfully these days, cats are off the menu!
