Visit The Majestic Pantheon Of Rome!

The magnificent Pantheon building in Rome is a beautifully preserved temple dating back to 117AD. It is a Roman temple that was built by order of the emperor Hadrian in honour of the ancient Roman pagan gods.

In 608 AD the Byzantine emperor Phocas gave it to Pope Boniface who ordered it to be used as a church from then on.

The name Pantheon comes from two Greek words; ‘pan’ meaning ‘everything’ and ‘teon’ meaning ‘divine’. The architecture of the Pantheon is truly remarkable. Its ingenious design and construction occurred ages ahead of its time. Even the Master painter and sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti said he felt ‘It was the work of angels, not men’.

The Dome was built with the support of arches than ran horizontally around its circumference. The Romans were especially skilled at building domes and used lighter materials as it neared the top to balance out the extreme pressure exerted by gravity on it.

The interior is richly decorated with paintings, stone carvings, statues and frescoes and is a truly mesmerising sight to behold! The Pantheon is in fact the home to the largest brick dome in the world but what makes this building so unique is its unusual shape.

Its front entrance is typical of a standard Roman temple of worship but its vast dome topped interior was surely built as a testament of the advanced expertise of Roman architects and their construction techniques.

The Pantheon is located in Piazza della Rotonda in Rome and is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 6.30pm and Sun 9am to 1pm.
