San Gimignano towers
Florence, Siena, Lucca and Pisa lost many of these towers over the years due to wars, floods, and bombs and few of their remain but San Gimignano has managed to preserve fourteen of what was estimated to have been one hundred towers that once stood here!

San Gimignano is a superb example of well-preserved medieval architecture with other notable buildings such as the Collegiate church, the Palazzo Comunale and the church of Sant’ Agostino. It earned the right to become a prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site for its historical and architectural value.

Three ancient walls encircle the town with eight entrances leadings into the four piazzas here. The most famous one is Piazza della Cisterna which has a beautiful triangular shape and a stunning old cistern built into it.

Each tower in San Gimignano has its own story to tell so why not visit them all, including the majestic Torre Grossa at an incredible height of 54 metres of the eerily named Torre del Diavolo meaning the ‘Devil’s Tower’.
